On a crisp Saturday morning in Chicago, while many were preparing for a quiet holiday weekend, something extraordinary was happening outside the Whitney M. Young, Jr. Library. With the sun just beginning to rise, a line of families stretched around the block—waiting not for a handout, but for a gesture of hope. And at the heart of it all stood 19-year-old youth advocate and founder of Chicago Emerging Stars, Jaqueza Thomas, leading his first-ever Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway with warmth, purpose, and heart.

A Mission Rooted in Experience

For Jaqueza, this wasn’t just an event—it was personal. Having once received a donated turkey as a child during a challenging time, he knows the power of a simple act of kindness. That memory, now a source of inspiration, planted the seed for what became a beautiful and transformative community moment.

“This giveaway wasn’t just about food,” Jaqueza shared. “It was about unity, dignity, and reminding our neighbors that they’re not alone. I wanted families to feel seen, supported, and celebrated during a season that can be especially difficult for so many.”

By 8:00 AM, the giveaway was in full swing. In just under 20 minutes, over 160 families received free Butterball turkeys—enough to bring comfort and joy to dinner tables across the South Side. Volunteers worked hand in hand to coordinate traffic, distribute turkeys, and greet community members with compassion and care. It was efficient, energetic, and overflowing with gratitude.

The energy of the day wasn’t just logistical—it was emotional. Parents smiled as they picked up their turkeys. Children laughed while playing near the tents. And neighbors who had never met before shared stories, laughter, and appreciation. It was a moment of community resilience and generosity that reminded everyone what the holiday season is truly about.

The Power Behind the Movement

This impactful event was proudly organized by Chicago Emerging Stars, the nonprofit Jaqueza founded to empower youth, strengthen communities, and create long-lasting change on the South Side of Chicago. Though still in its early stages, the organization is quickly becoming a force for good—thanks to Jaqueza’s vision, leadership, and deeply personal mission.

A Shining Example of Youth Leadership

At just 19 years old, Jaqueza is more than a student, more than an advocate—he is a builder of movements. As a sophomore at the University of Illinois at Chicago studying political science, a youth commissioner for Mayor Brandon Johnson, a police cadet, and a community organizer, Jaqueza wears many hats. But no title means more to him than “servant leader.”

His ability to connect, mobilize, and uplift makes him a standout voice in public service—and the Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway is just one example of the kind of grassroots impact he’s making across Chicago.
