Voices of Impact
Real Stories from Youth, Mentors & Families
At Chicago Emerging Stars, our impact isn’t just measured in numbers it’s measured in moments, growth, and lives changed. These are the voices of the youth we walk alongside and the families we serve.

“Being around Jaqueza has truly changed the way I see my future.”
Before meeting him, I didn’t think college was for me but his story, his leadership, and his belief in me made me see what’s possible. He introduced me to CPFTA and opened my eyes to opportunities I didn’t even know existed. One of the most important things he’s helped me realize is that if I put my mind to something, I can achieve it no matter how hard it seems. He’s taught me to stay true to myself, never let anyone change who I am, and always believe in my own voice. Because of Jaqueza, I see more for myself and for that, I’m truly grateful.

"Jaqueza isn’t just my mentor, he’s one of the realest people I know."
We’ve had so many laughs and good times, even when life was tough. He’s always got a smile on his face, even when I know he’s going through stuff too. That alone keeps me going. There were times I felt stuck, like nothing was working out, but he never gave up on me. He helped me get a job when I really needed it, even when it felt impossible. I honestly don’t know where I’d be without him. He’s more than just support. He’s family.

“I came because my friend invited me, but I stayed because of everything I learned.”
My experience with Chicago Emerging Stars has been really helpful. I learned new skills, met supportive people, and gained more confidence in myself. The program helped me grow in both school and my personal life.

"I've grown a lot since joining this program."
I would say this program is really sensational because it's all about helping the community. When I first joined, I was really shy, but this program helped me become more comfortable communicating with others and supporting people for the right reasons. It's been a great experience for me.

“Being part of Chicago Emerging Stars really feels like a built-in family.”
It's been a really good experience with a lot of fun and teamwork. It feels like a built-in family because everyone gets connected, and everybody has the chance to speak and feel heard. Outside of the program it has helped me take accountability for my actions, and that's something I'm really proud of. I'm grateful to be a part of Chicago Emerging Stars.

“Since meeting Jaqueza, the way I think and move has completely changed.”
I truly consider him a mentor. He’s always been there for me, even during my lowest moments. He constantly encouraged me to keep my head up and focus on doing positive things instead of getting caught up in negativity. I’ve grown so much, and it’s because of his support and guidance.

“This program made me want to stay involved.”
This experience helped me want to engage more and be more involved with my community. It gave me the confidence to stay involved and continue participating in other Chicago Emerging Stars programs. I like that it's youth-led, our ideas are heard, and our feedback helps shape the program. It's fun, but I've also learned skills that I use every day. I even invited two of my close friends to join because I knew they could grow from it too.

“My mom made me join but I'm really glad she did.”
My experience with Chicago Emerging Stars has been fun and interesting. I didn't know what to expect at first, but the program has helped me grow, meet new people, and become more comfortable talking with others. I'm really happy I joined.

“At first I was really shy, but in the end I came out of my shell.”
My experience was great. This was the first after-school program I’ve ever attended, and at first I was shy, but in the end I got out of my shell. Everything about Chicago Emerging Stars and this program was good. I was in a youth leadership program where we were broken up into four groups to lead a community project based on issues we found in our community. Surprisingly, each group of youth participated and communicated with each other. Both of our instructors, Jaqueza and Zion were very helpful and nice. I will truly miss being at the program, and I really wish it ran every day of the week, including the weekend. I’ve really grown and shown others that I am not shy anymore, and I walk with confidence even if I feel a little nervous sometimes. That’s what Chicago Emerging Stars taught me, and I am really going to miss it.

"Jaqueza Thomas is a good advocate and mentor for the youth."
I've been under his mentorship for the past two years, and I can honestly say I don't know where I would be without him by my side throughout my journey of growing into a man and a young adult. He has opened my eyes to life and shown me that there's more to it than the negative things that surround me. He helped me get two jobs, took me to different events, including church, and continues to motivate me to keep going and push through life. I honestly don't know how he does it because he's young himself, but he still finds a way to help others throughout the city of Chicago.

"I've learned that it's okay to step outside my comfort zone."
Chicago Emerging Stars has helped me come out of my shell. I've learned that it's okay to step outside my comfort zone, talk to new people, and be more confident in myself. I've learned how to communicate better, show respect to everyone, and just be myself. I've also learned to enjoy life more, have fun, make new memories, and appreciate every opportunity I get.

“Jaqueza is a game changer in this city.”
He brought 160 families together for Thanksgiving, but it wasn’t just about food. It was about love in action. At just 19 years old, Jaqueza is leading with purpose and proving that young Black men are not statistics—we are solutions.
Community Member – Turkey Giveaway
“It’s more than just a meal—it’s a reminder that we’re not alone.”
I woke up early to make sure I got this turkey, and I’m so glad I did. With a big family to feed, things can get tight. This event reminded me that people care—that we’re not forgotten.

Back-to-School Bash
“Volunteering at Chicago Emerging Stars’ Back-to-School Bash was truly a blessing. ”
This organization makes a real impact in the community, and it was powerful to see how many youth and families they support. I’m grateful I could be a part of it.
