More Than a Trip: Building Community on Wheels

There was a moment right before the music got louder and the lights dimmed when you could feel the shift.
At first, some of the youth stood off to the side. A few laughed, a few hesitated, a few weren’t too sure about stepping onto the floor. But within minutes, that changed. One by one, they laced up, stepped out, and found their rhythm.
This wasn’t just a skating trip.
For many of the young people in Chicago Emerging Stars’ Community STARS program, this was the first time they were able to simply show up as themselves with no pressure, no expectations, just space to connect, laugh, and be present.
And that mattered.
Because before the ideas, before the projects, before the presentations, there has to be trust.
Throughout the night, you could see walls coming down. Youth who had just met began encouraging each other. Laughter echoed across the rink. Even those who started off unsure found themselves right in the middle of it all by the end.
Moments like this don’t always get highlighted but they are the foundation. This is where teams are built. This is where confidence begins. This is where community starts to feel real.
At Chicago Emerging Stars, we believe youth deserve spaces where they can experience joy just as much as growth. Because when young people feel safe, connected, and supported, they show up differently not just in the moment, but in everything they go on to build.
And this was just the beginning.
