What It Looks Like When Young People Are Trusted to Lead

At Chicago Emerging Stars, we don’t believe in waiting until young people are “ready” to lead.

We believe they already are.

They just need the space to do it.

Over the past few weeks, that belief has been coming to life through our Community STARS: Youth Changemakers Lab. What started as a room full of young people has quickly become something much deeper, a space where voices are heard, ideas are taken seriously, and leadership is practiced in real time.

From the very first day, our youth didn’t just participate, they stepped forward.

They’ve led conversations. They’ve challenged each other’s thinking. They’ve asked hard questions about the communities they live in.

And most importantly, they’ve started to take ownership.

Together, they identified the issues that matter most to them not what adults think should matter, but what they actually experience every day: mental health, violence, lack of resources, and the feeling of not being heard.

These aren’t just topics.

These are realities.

But what’s been powerful is watching the shift.

The conversations didn’t stay at “what’s wrong.” They moved into “why does this exist?” And now, they’re stepping into “what can we build to change it?”

Right now, our youth are working in teams to design real community impact projects ideas that will come to life in their schools, neighborhoods, and spaces they care about. They are learning how to communicate, collaborate, and problem-solve in ways that feel real, not rehearsed.

And you can feel it in the room.

Young people who were quiet are now speaking up. Teams that didn’t know each other are now building together. Ideas that once felt distant are starting to feel possible.

This is what youth empowerment actually looks like.

It’s not a moment.

It’s a process.

It’s trust, consistency, and space.

As we head into spring break, our youth are not leaving with just ideas they’re leaving with direction, ownership, and something they genuinely care about. When we return, they won’t be starting over.

They’ll be building.

At Chicago Emerging Stars, this is the work we are committed to creating spaces where young people are not just included, but centered. Where they are not just heard, but trusted. Where they are not just supported, but challenged to grow.

Because when young people are given real responsibility, they rise in ways that can’t be taught only experienced.

And we’re just getting started.

If this work speaks to you, we invite you to stay connected to what we’re building. Whether it’s through sharing our work, showing up, or investing in spaces like this, your support helps us continue creating opportunities where young people can lead, grow, and build something meaningful for their communities.

Together, we can continue shaping spaces where youth don’t have to wait to make an impact they can start now.
